The De Jong family started growing peonies in 2013. The unique location of the nursery, with lots of sun hours and sandy soils, meant that De Jong quickly distinguished itself with fantastic flowers, available early in the season.
Currently, De Jong cultivates about 3.8 hectares of Sarah Bernhardt and a quarter hectare of dazzling Command Performance, on a state-of-the-art nursery. It’s a lot of work, but they manage it well: Simon and his family harvest over 600,000 peonies during peak season.
In the coming years, De Jong will plant more Sarah Bernhardt-peonies, but he’s also planning to look into other, early varieties. This will enable De Jong to harvest even earlier, extending the season even more. The location of the nursery, in the south of the Netherlands, is a big advantage for De Jong.
But most important, according to De Jong, is enjoying every day working with his peonies, growing and harvesting the most beautiful flowers. That’s a feeling we can understand like no other, so it will not come as a surprise that we are extremely proud of this collaboration with De Jong!
